Customer Spotlight: Jane’s Sourdough Success Story

At Sourdough by the Sea, we love hearing about the triumphs and experiences of our passionate baking community.

This month, we’re excited to spotlight Jane, who recently embarked on her sourdough journey and achieved her first successful bakes.

Her story is a testament to the joy and satisfaction that come from sourdough baking.

Meet Jane:

Jane, from Cornwall, has always loved experimenting in the kitchen.

Inspired by the idea of baking her own bread, she decided to try her hand at sourdough bread making.

With a bit of trepidation and a lot of excitement, she purchased our Sourdough Starter Kit and began her journey!

Jane’s Sourdough Journey:

1. Starting with the Basics:

Jane began by carefully following the instructions provided in the kit. She learned how to feed and maintain her starter, named “Bubbles” by her young daughter. “It was a bit intimidating at first,” Jane admits, “but seeing Bubbles grow and become bubbly was incredibly rewarding.”

2. Overcoming Challenges:

Like many first-time sourdough bakers, Jane faced a few challenges. Her first few loaves were dense and flat, but she didn’t give up. “I realized that patience and consistency are key,” she says. “I tweaked my feeding schedule, adjusted the hydration levels, and kept practicing.”

3. The First Success:

After several attempts, Jane finally achieved her first successful sourdough loaf. “When I pulled that golden, crusty loaf out of the oven, I was over the moon,” she recalls. “The house was filled with the most amazing smell, and cutting into that loaf to reveal the airy crumb inside was pure joy.”

Jane’s Tips for New Bakers:

Jane has some helpful advice for fellow novice sourdough bakers:

  • Be Patient: Sourdough baking is a process that takes time and practice. Don’t be discouraged by initial failures.
  • Observe and Adjust: Pay attention to your starter and dough. Adjust feeding schedules, hydration levels, and fermentation times based on their behavior.
  • Enjoy the Journey: Embrace the learning process and enjoy the small victories along the way. Each bake is a step closer to mastery.

Jane’s Favorite Sourdough Recipe:

Jane loves experimenting with different recipes, but her favorite remains a classic sourdough loaf. Here’s a simple recipe she follows:

Ingredients:

  • 500g strong bread flour
  • 100g active sourdough starter
  • 10g salt
  • 325g water

Instructions:

  1. Mix the flour, water, and sourdough starter in a large bowl until combined. Let it rest for 30 minutes.
  2. Add salt and knead the dough until smooth.
  3. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 4-6 hours or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat your oven to the highest setting and place a Dutch oven or baking stone inside.
  5. Shape the dough into a round and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  6. Score the top of the dough, place it in the preheated Dutch oven, and bake for 20 minutes with the lid on. Remove the lid and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes until the crust is golden brown.
